Today I was reading about the release of Lotus Notes 8.5.1. It would appear that even the minor releases of Lotus Notes and Domino are brining about significant changes to the product as well as the way we do things.
On Ed Brill’s Blog he states:
The part of today’s announcement that I want to focus on first are changes to the way Notes and Domino are marketed and licensed. The biggest part of the news is that as of Notes/Domino 8.5.1 eGA — coming in just a few days — Lotus Domino Designer will now be available at no charge. That’s right! Free!
I thought that this announcement we really good as it will allow for more innovation and hopefully there will be fresh ideas in this space because of it being more accessible. I will be interested to see if this impacts on the projects at OpenNTF (Open source applications for Lotus Notes and Domino).
It is also interesting to see other changes to licensing models which may help to make some of the less popular products a bit more common. By this I am referring to the likes of Lotus Mobile Connect which provides for secure VPN access.
I expect that I will be scanning the popular blogs today to see what the reaction to these announcements is like. But for the time being, I am very excited about it.
