Today, thanks to a comment left on my blog yesterday, I was able to log into a temporary cloud based Microsoft SharePoint account and experience what Microsoft has to offer. Simply put, if I removed the branding I would have thought that I was in a customized Lotus Quickr place. The main features and functionality seem to be the same.
Obviously, SharePoint is focused more around Microsoft Office, however, Lotus Quickr has been made to provide more freedom when it comes to office productivity tools.
For me, this changed from becoming a comparison between two different products to being the identification of two very identical solutions. That being said, I will now be looking at the Microsoft way of selling Lotus Quickr.
Here are a couple of screen shots which show just how closely related Lotus Quickr and Microsoft SharePoint are:

But visual similarity has no relevance. I can make a native Notes application look just like a Quickr site. I could visually recreate the SP site in Notes too.
It’s really all about how you get there and how it’s extended/maintained etc, not just how they look.
but you need more Server than domino-server
but you need more designer than notes-designer
but you need more Ram
but you need SQL-Server
…..
@Brett
I am aware of that, I guess that in my blog post I was going more from the view of a first impression rather than drilling any further down.
@Christian
So the overall experience with using and supporting SharePoint is obviously quite complicated in comparison to Lotus Quickr which is essentially an add-on product to Lotus Domino server.
Name me a product that MS created in an organic way that was unique to them. The OS? Office? RDBMS? “Collaboration”? Antivirus? Web server? No to all of them.
And the trend continues, Sharepoint is a blatant rip of QuickPlace. That is why they are very similar. Except on was marketed, and given away for “free”.
Oh, and then IBM reciprocated, Quickr is a blatant rip off of Sharepoint.
But IBM was there first (Quickr is to QuickPlace as Notes 8 is to Notes), so you can give them a pass…..
@Darren
Imagine what little you would be able to do with a computer if IBM never came up with the ideas?
nodody knows QuickR !!!! (Domino-user don’t know QuickR).
MS sells 10000000000 better than IBM (better Marketing).
I think IBM is full und doesn’t need QuickR & ….
Better Products but bad (very bad) marketing.
Drop me an email or skype with your new email address and I will fill you in on some MS how to see SP insight.
BUT it still helps to visualize what is out there.
